First day of a (hopefully, cross your fingers) slower year

Happy New Year. Got back with the kids about thirty minutes ago and they are already in bed. Heck they passed out in the car on the way home.

We went to a friends, and there were quite a few people there, like nine kids and twelve adults, so fairly sizeable for a small get together. After dinner the kids watched some adults set off fireworks and then they got to do some snakes, pop-its, party poppers, and tanks. They always dig that kind of stuff.

Then the adults played dominos, which we do over there sometimes, and I usually lose my butt off. Only this time my luck was better and I actually won, I'm told by a significant margin (I didn't look at the score).

Meanwhile the kids played with toys, video games, watched movies, and tormented the rats. Yes, I said rats. One of my friend's kids has eight pet rats. We're not talking cute little snake-food mice here, we're talking outright rats, a good six or seven inches long. See for yourself.

Probably most interesting, if not most shocking, is Darby rode a scooter on the back porch for the first time since she broke her leg falling off a scooter. And she seemed to enjoy it, strangely enough.

There were actually many other interesting moments and I think all had fun, but I am way tired right now and barely remember much of it. If more comes to mind I will update this post.

On a closing note, my sympathies go out to those who ventured to downtown OKC. As I passed the downtown area at 12:51 I could see, from the highway overpass, cars backed up for miles in all directions as people were trying to get to the highway to head home after the downtown new year ceremonies. Definitely glad I didn't join them. In fact, I'd bet many of them are still there. Suckers.
