Lots of softball potential

Darby attended her first full softball practice of the season tonight. I'm feeling pretty good about the team, as almost all of the girls are quite good. I mean, I'm proud of my daughter and all, but she isn't anywhere near one of the best players on this new team, so I have pretty high expectations about this season. Not only from the chances of winning perspective, but from the my-daughter-having-to-rise-to-the-next-level perspective as well. Darby's a very good player, but she's always been just shy of being a great player, and I'm hoping that being around so much talent will push her above that line. In the past, she has been on teams that didn't have a strong record (except for the baseball team last season), or many other strong players. Now, being on a team composed of nearly all strong players, the potential is there for her to learn much and come out better for it, which is what I really want from this season. I'm hoping for this season to be a watershed for her full potential.

On the flip side, Shelby had a practice fencing tournament while Darby was at softball practice. Her mom says she didn't do so well, getting beat by a far younger and less experienced fencer. Her head wasn't in the game and we had to ask her quite seriously if she wanted to continue fencing. She was kind of wishy-washy about it, but decided to stay with it. We'll see how that goes on Thursday.
