Knowing we'd have pretty much NO time after school and before the game to get the remaining uniform items we needed, I picked up Darby for lunch, and after eating we went to a nearby sporting goods store to stock up. We got new cleats, socks, and a belt, among other things, to match her new uniform. Notice how big those pants are? Between last night and this afternoon they had to be tacked just so they'd somewhat fit, with the belt doing the rest.
Darby did a reasonably good job at playing her position and watching the ball, but all she had to show for it in the end was a strike out, a hit-by-pitch (square in the back -- ouch!), a walk, and a would-be-single that was stretched into a double by an overthrow, at least until she over ran the base and got tagged out.
In the field, she shined at moments, getting noticed by a few parents with comments like, "wow, she's pretty good", but then losing luster with two dropped balls that would definitely have been outs had they been caught (and they were VERY catchable for her). Fortunately her fielding issues were inconsequential as her team won 13-6. And really, it was only the first game, with just a few practices preceding it. So there's plenty of time to get in the groove.
What's going to kill me, though, is these 5pm games. Rushing from work in rushing-home-from-work traffic to get the kids from school, get Darby changed, and then to the field through the traffic again seems more tedious this year over past years. Either it just is more tedious, or my age is catching up with me. If today was any indication (we were ten minutes late for warm-ups), it's going to be one LONG season.
